Self Care Tips During The Holiday Season
The holidays can be magical yet chaotic. The family bonding, jam-packed schedules, and expectations can take a big toll on our minds and bodies from November to New Year’s. That’s why it’s even more important than normal to take care of yourself, mind and body, during this crucial time of the year.
Balanced Holiday Food Indulgences
It’s all about moderation – Don’t overeat, avoid processed foods (full of excessive sugar and salt your body rather not have), make sure you stay hydrated, and get plenty of sleep (research showed that thirst and sleep deprivation increases food cravings).
Healthy eating doesn’t mean depriving yourself of your holiday favorites. Opt for healthier substitutes, say, yogurt instead of sour cream and mayo, baking instead of frying, use less butter and oil while cooking… These little things will do the trick.
Don’t Forget To Exercise
It’s important to maintain regular exercise for both your mental and physical health. I’m not talking about intense workout here – kudos to you if you are a gym lover – we are talking about easy, gentle exercise such as taking a walk, yoga, or simply soak up the sun… there are a million other things to do. A routine to get your body moving a little improves sleep, mood and reduces the risk of obesity and diseases.
Take Care Of Your Gut
Holidays are the time where we are exposed to foods that are a bit more rich and indulgent than our usual fare, and the pressure of hustle and bustle. During and after the holidays, the digestive drama followed is surely one of the worst.
In addition to sticking to a healthy eating plan, you can also turn to probiotics and digestive enzymes to help. You can find them in many foods, including kefir, cheese, sauerkraut, bananas, pineapples, and kiwi. High-quality probiotic and digestive enzyme supplements are a great choice if you do not take these foods very often.
Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself
Don’t beat yourself up if you sometimes find yourself stuffing in more food than you had intended, or lying in bed all day. Practice kindness to yourself, think of it as learning opportunities, and simply start again your goals tomorrow.
